Why is your gift to the St. Matthew's Fund important?
The St. Matthew's Fund is the largest source of revenue for the school. Fundraising events, like the auction, also help to support the school’s operating expenses. Together, these resources fuel the learning that distinguishes an exceptional educational program.
The Impact You Can Make
Your gifts allow St. Matthew’s to thrive and grow as we prepare our talented students for exciting futures. This investment helps build community, enduring friendships, strong partnerships and provides our students an education of lasting values.
Gifts to the St. Matthew's Fund support the operating resources that enable the school to:
maintain and expand its exceptional programs
recruit and retain excellent faculty and staff
honor our commitment to a diverse community through a robust tuition assistance program
improve facilities and teaching spaces for our talented students and faculty and
stay on the leading edge of advances in educational technology, curriculum and instruction
Outside of tuition, the St. Matthew’s Fund is the largest source of revenue for the school. Events, like the auction, also help to support the school’s operating expenses. Together, these resources make it possible for us to hire and retain outstanding teachers, have a socio-economically diverse community, offer comprehensive programs in the maker lab, arts, world languages, and experiential learning which set our students apart in high school and beyond.
The St. Matthew’s Fund supports our faculty and our programs. Salaries and benefits represent 68% of St. Matthew’s operating expenses, which is in line with the national average. The St. Matthew’s Fund supports all the operations of the school including the financial aid program. About 11% of our students receive financial aid.
All gifts ensure an exceptional experience for every student, in each class. The size of the gift depends on individual means, and a gift from every family is our goal! All gifts are greatly appreciated.
Independent schools talk about 'the gap' – the amount of the operating expenses that are funded by the fundraising contributions. At St. Matthew’s, that amount is approximately $3,500 per student. We are an economically diverse community and each family is asked to thoughtfully consider a gift that will be personally meaningful. While “the gap” is a starting point for consideration of gift size, not all families are able to contribute the full amount, and some families can give more. It is a personal decision; each family is requested to participate to the best of their ability. In appreciation, all donors who give $3,500 or more are considered leaders within St. Matthew's philanthropic culture, and are invited to the Leadership Reception in the fall.

Raising tuition to the actual cost of educating each student would place too large a burden on many families, making it impossible for their children to attend St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School. By containing tuition costs through your support of the St. Matthew’s Fund, we are able to fulfill our commitment to attracting talented as well as diverse students. All donations to the St. Matthew’s Fund are fully tax-deductible.
Knowing that everyone contributes to the Day School's fundraising programs helps strengthen and unite our community behind our mission, and the total becomes greater than the sum of its parts. 100% support for the St. Matthew's Fund includes trustees, current and alumni families, grandparents, faculty, administration and staff.

The Day School Foundation (DSF) was established as a non-profit, charitable foundation in 1995. Its purpose is to manage funds raised by St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School in support of the school’s operations, educational programs and facilities. Donations to the St. Matthew's Fund, Capital Campaign, Fund-A-Need and event net revenue are made directly to the Day School Foundation. The DSF is managed by an independent, five-member board comprised of current and alumni parents in close collaboration with the Board of Trustees of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School.
