  • Why is my gift to the St. Matthew's Fund important?

About 10% of the school’s annual operating expenses comes from fundraising each year. Outside of tuition, the St. Matthew’s Fund is the largest source of revenue for the school. Events, like the auction, also help to support the school’s budget. Together, these resources make it possible for us to hire and retain outstanding teachers, have a socio-economically diverse community, offer comprehensive programs in the maker lab, arts, world languages and experiential learning which set our students apart in high school and beyond.
  • What is the St. Matthew's Fund money spent on?

The St. Matthew’s Fund, like our operating budget, supports our faculty and our programs. 68% of St. Matthew’s operating budget goes to salaries and benefits which is in line with the national average. The St. Matthew’s Fund supports all the operations of the school including the financial aid program. About 11% of our students received financial aid in 2017-18.
  • What is an appropriate contribution?

Gifts of all sizes ensure an exceptional experience for every student, every year. The size of a gift depends on individual means, and a gift from every family is our goal! All gifts are greatly appreciated.

Independent schools talk about 'the gap' – the amount of the operating budget that is funded by the annual fund. At St. Matthew’s, that amount is approximately $3,500 per student.
In appreciation, donors of $3,500 or more are invited to a Leadership Donor event in the Fall.

  • Why not just raise tuition?

Raising tuition to the actual cost of educating each student would place too large a burden on many families, making it impossible for their children to attend St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School. By containing tuition costs through your support of the St. Matthew’s Fund, we are able to fulfill our commitment to attracting talented as well as diverse students. All donations to the St. Matthew’s Fund are fully tax-deductible.
  • Why is 100% participation important?

Knowing that everyone contributes to the Day School's fundraising programs helps strengthen and unite our community behind our mission, and the total becomes greater than the sum of its parts. 100% support for the St. Matthew's Fund includes trustees, current and alumni families, grandparents, faculty, administration and staff.
  • Why is it necessary to fundraise beyond tuition?

St. Matthew’s tuition only covers approximately 90% of our operating expenses. Like many independent schools, we rely on additional contributions from the St. Matthew's Fund and other school events to make up the additional 10% of expenses associated with operating our school. This consistent level of support allows the school to offer the educational experiences that make our school unique, and helps moderate tuition increases for all students.
  • Is my gift tax-deductible?

Yes. St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School is a nonprofit organization recognized as tax exempt by the IRS under Section 501(c)(3). Your charitable gift is fully tax deductible as defined by the IRS. Tickets, auction items and gifts in kind may or may not be fully tax deductible under certain circumstances.
  • What is the Day School Foundation

The Day School Foundation (DSF) was established as a non-profit, charitable foundation in 1995. Its purpose is to manage funds raised by St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School in support of the school’s operations, educational programs and facilities. Donations to the St. Matthew's Fund, Capital Campaign, Fund-A-Need and event net revenue are made directly to the Day School Foundation. The DSF is managed by an independent, five-member board comprised of current and alumni parents in close collaboration with the Board of Trustees of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School.
