It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Angelo Dentoni, longtime PE teacher and coach at St. Matthew's, on January 20, following a long battle with cancer. "Mr. D" - as he was known to generations of St. Matthew's students - was truly an inspiration and role model to so many Mustangs, both on and off the athletics field. His amazing energy, positive attitude, and incredible kindness were legendary. A keen singer, guitarist, and song writer, he would often perform for the school. "Da-da-da-da: DA-DA" was something he started years ago which still works to quiet students of any age down!
Mr. D. wore so many hats at our school: PE teacher, athletic director, coach, after-care director, mentor, role-model and friend. He embodied the St. Matthew’s spirit and epitomized the “Work Hard/Play Hard” motto that filled our school days, rolling up his sleeves to help whenever and wherever needed. Mr. D. had incredible empathy and wrapped his arms and heart around those that needed an extra hug, sage advice and someone to listen.
We all remember Sports Night, after school batting practice on the front lawn - Angelo playing his guitar in chapel for a sing along and “Jump Rope for Heart,” when he shaved his hair in the middle of the cheering student body gathered on the front playground after the students reached a school wide fundraising challenge. Class of 1994 will remember the legendary graduation party/ dinner in San Mateo where he, Mr. Flockhart, and Dr. Ellison performed a song Mr. D had written. His smiling face is etched on our hearts forever.
Thank you Angelo for making our school a better place and brightening each and every one of our days. We send our sincere condolences to his wife Molly and all his family. Rest in peace, Coach.
