FIFTH GRADE GOES TO SEA

To compliment science units on water and living at sea, St. Matthew's 5th grade students ventured into San Francisco in June to do some hands on exploration. The adventure began at Pier 45 on the San Francisco Bay, where they climbed aboard the WWII submarine and got a very cozy feel as to how cramped the living conditions at sea were for all those men. Every sailor, small and tall, stood an hour-long duty to keep the submarine and the Bay safe throughout the night. Completing the watch duty successfully, students disembarked the submarine after a quick breakfast, boarded the famous cable car and rode to Nob Hill to Grace Cathedral. For a few hours students explored the Labyrinth within the tapestries and artwork of the cathedral. It was then time to head back to the waterfront.

Upon arrival at Hyde Street Pier at Aquatic Park, students got their sailing orders to board the Schooner Scow Alma. This three masted sailing vessel was a floating marine science classroom for the next few hours for the smaller sailors, while the tall sailors sat back and enjoyed the view. It was hard work, but all returned to shore with exhausted smiles on their faces, if not a little windburn, too.
