SUPPORTING
ST. MATTHEW'S

All gifts to St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School are vital to the advancement of the School and help to ensure the continued quality of education that has become the hallmark of one of the finest schools in the Bay Area.

St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School raises funds in two ways - the Annual Fund and Dickens House. Families are asked to support both of these efforts as part of their commitment to the School and its students.

Along with tremendous personal satisfaction, charitable gifts provide significant tax benefits for the donor. There are many ways to express your commitment to our future and we appreciate your support!

Annual Fund

THE ANNUAL FUND is an integral component of the Day School's overall budget of $4.2 million, and the School's largest source of income after tuition. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide the financial resources that enable St. Matthew's to maintain and expand its exceptional programs, hire and support our excellent faculty and staff, offer tuition assistance, improve facilities and stay on the leading edge of advances in educational technology.

Unrestricted funds make up the largest percentage of gifts and allow the Day School to apply financial resources where it is needed most. This also provides the flexibility within the budget to respond to initiatives that arise throughout the year.

Why not raise tuition to the full amount necessary? Or cut expenses?

Like any non-profit opera company, dance troupe, regional theater, art museum or university, admission prices do not cover the full cost of operations. If tuition alone were to cover the entire cost of a St. Matthew's education, it would limit the number of qualified students who could afford to attend. Also, St. Matthew's must remain competitive with other Independent Schools that rely on healthy annual giving programs. The Day School operates on a very tight budget while ensuring a strong academic program, small class size, competitive faculty and staff salaries, professional development funds and financial assistance.

What is an appropriate Annual Fund contribution?

The size of a gift depends on your means and a gift from every parent is our goal! No gift is too small or large - all gifts are welcome, tax-deductible and make a difference. Gifts at the Blue and Gold Gift Club level ($2,000 - $3,999) help meet the shortfall between tuition income and operating expenses.

What is the intrinsic value of having 100% participation in the Annual Fund and Dickens House?

Knowing that everyone contributes to the Day School's fundraising programs helps strengthen and unite our community behind the School's mission, and the total becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

WAYS TO SUPPORT THE ANNUAL FUND

Cash Gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extent of the law and may be made with cash, check or credit card (credit cards are accepted for gifts greater than $1000). A pledge payment schedule may be arranged through the Development Office.

Stocks or Securities offer a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift. If you are interested in donating securities, please contact the Director of Development Linda Handalian (lhandalian@stmatthewsday.org, 650-342-5436) for instructions.

Matching Corporate Gifts offer an additional source of income for St. Matthew's and an opportunity for you to leverage your own gift into a larger donation. Your employer may double or even triple your gift. You can obtain a gift form from your Human Relations Department and follow the instructions to initiate a match. You will be credited for the total amount, and your employer will also receive donor recognition in our Annual Report.

OTHER GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

Gifts in Kind

Gifts such as computers, software, professional services and other educationally related items, which provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of St. Matthew's, are appreciated. The School does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind.

Planned Gifts

Contributions made through estate plans help build St. Matthew's future financial security. By including St. Matthew's in your financial and estate planning, we can not only put your gifts to good use, but also save you tax dollars through the charitable deduction and the avoidance of capital gains taxes. We can work with you and your financial adviser to create the planned giving instrument that works best for you.

Major Gifts

Contributions to the major gifts funds provide immediate support to two very specific and important programs at St. Matthew's.

Faculty Fund - Recognizing that our faculty is our most important asset, these funds support the professional growth and development of teachers and make it possible to attract and retain the highest quality faculty through competitive salaries.

Financial Assistance Fund - Financial assistance benefits those students who, without support, would not be able to attend St. Matthew's.
